Goose Egg

That it should be so easy for us—
that we, like Alice, could
take some mystery into ourselves
and be changed.

But we mess with the mystery,
we pick it apart, dissecting and disconnecting
until all the pieces are scattered
and we’re left no wiser.

Dull and unenlightened,
we are puzzled by the power that eludes us
as soon as we attempt to decipher
its magic.
